The main things are technology, vet schools and we also know a lot more about the animals than they did back then. Vets can cure almost any diseases unlike the people back then when if they couldn't cure a disease they would just give the poor animal a herb. Another thing that is changed is the animals they care for. Years ago they would only treat horses and now they treat a whole range of animals.
