Veteran vet for short. What is it? A vet is a animal doctor, a person who cares and heals animals.
There are seven types of vets that all specialize in different animals. Here is the list:
Avian Practice (birds)
Equine Practice (horses)
Beef Cattle Practice (cattle raised for meat)
Feline Practice(cats)
Canine/Feline Practice (dogs and cats)
Exotic Companion Mammal Practice (ferrets, rabbits, mice, rats and other small mammals often kept as pets)
Food Animal Practice (cattle and pigs) It actually takes five years of studying at a University for all of these practices. There are exceptions like Cambridge Uni that doe six years. To achieve graduating from a Uni as a vet with a bachelors degree you must take subjects at Uni.The preferred subjects are english, physics, chemistry and biology in NZ. Some countries such as England and America do A levels, to be a vet you need A levels in: must have Chemistry, Biology and either Maths or Physics 5 highers. You also need 3 A levels of Chemistry and two of Biology, Maths, Physics, plus two other subjects for 2 Advanced Highers: Two Sciences. Must have Chemistry and preferably Biology. To get the degree you must go to the right Uni. It depends which Uni you want to go to like, close to home or best Uni. The top 3 Uni's to be a vet in the world were:
University of California - found in the US
Cornell University - found in the US
Royal Veterinary College - University of London I think it's still cool wherever you go your still getting the degree and that's what's important.
In NZ there is a shortage in the role of being a vet so there's a good chance you will get the job. The diagram below shows a picture of the chance of getting a job as a Vet in New Zealand.
Before you consider studying to be vet you might also want to consider if you have the skills. The skills are communication, empathy, detail oriented, physical stamina and technical skills. It's ok if you don't have all of these skills you can learn.
There are many benefits of being a vet one of them can be considered the pay. The pay in NZ for a new vet is usually $58k-$76k per year. While an experienced vet will earn $76k-$130k per year. Overall you should be a vet because you are making a difference and healing animals.
